9 June - Truck Fix, Goodbye Ryndon and Hello Fallon Naval Air Station

9 June
Yesterday after leaving Elko and while we were heading back to the campground we got an error message on the truck, so I made an appointment for 0700 hrs this morning.  When I went to leave this morning in addition to the error message I also had a "check engine" light, so it is a good thing we are getting this checked out.  I arrived at the dealer about 0650 hrs and they finished up about 1000 hrs.  The part that failed to cause the problems is the same part involved in the recall that they wanted to do in Salt Lake City but could not sue to a lack of parts.  Luckily the dealership in Elko had a replacement catalytic converter and they were willing to work me in!!  All was covered under warranty too.  So back to the campground and Doreen had most of the RV packed up.  We finished up and got out of there right at 1100 hrs.

The drive from Elko NV to Fallon NV was pretty uneventful.  The landscape was pretty barren and you could see a long ways in most directions.
Lots of tunnels out here.  Pretty cool.  Many on the rail lines too.

Kind of bland view but you can see for a long ways.  We ran into rain periodically.  Nothing heavy.

Snow-capped mountains in the background

Still seeing salt and sand as we go

Lots of sage brush, no trees.
This is kind of a panoramic video Doreen took to try to illustrate what our view looked like.  It is hard to capture in still pictures.

So, we finally arrived at Fallon Naval Air Station at 4:20 pm after driving 280 miles.  We quickly found the check-in building and proceeded to the campground.  Like our drive down, it is very "deserty" here too.  The entire campground is gravel with poured concrete slabs to park the RV.  It is "full hook-up" which is always nice.  They have a NEX (like a PX or BX) and a Commissary for food, plus all the other amenities of a military installation.
Doreen places the Nevada sticker on the map

States are being filled in.  Not sure why they chose the colors they did for the western states, but not very colorful!

Inside the laundry facility.  Doreen did a couple loads after we arrived and got things set up.

A central barbecue and picnic area.  Here they do not provide a picnic table for each site.

Our campsite - pretty bare, but spacious.

A view down the road

Plenty of room for the truck.

Rear view.
Another thing about staying here is the jet noise, also known as "the sound of freedom".  The FA-18's flying over are a constant reminder of our men and women on duty 24x7 to protect our nation.

Tomorrow Doreen is planning a road trip to Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. We will be here three nights (two days) and depart Monday for Sacramento and Travis Air Force Base FamCamp.

  1. Since it's so deserty out west, do you find the camper has sand in it from the breeze, etc?
