27 June - Last Day in Petaluma; Santa Rosa and the Charles Schulz Museum

 27 June
Our last day at Petaluma Coast Guard Station.  It has been a very nice stay, very quiet here with much wildlife. We would definitely stay here again.

Today we departed Petaluma and as we did we stopped for a formation of Coast Guard culinary students marching to the dining hall to prepare lunch.
"Road Guards Out!"  Traffic stops until the formation passes.

All decked out in their white coats, ready to prepare a great lunch!

We then headed north to Santa Rosa to check out the Charles Schulz Museum and Ice Rink.  The museum commemorates the cartoonist Charles Schultz and all the Peanuts characters he created.  It was filled with history of Schulz starting all the way back to World War II where he served in the Army in Europe, through his post-Army days and the birth of the Peanuts characters.

Mr. Schulz was born and raised in Minnesota and was an avid hockey player.

Charles M. Schulz office, where he did his drawing.  It is said that "Charles M. Schulz did more than produce a daily comic strip... he revolutionized the world of cartooning."
The museum contains several interactive display including this one where the children can draw their own  cartoon strips

Across the street from the museum is the ice rink built by Charles M. Schulz,  He loved ice skating as did his wife and daughter. Inside is also a cafe.

Adjacent to the ice rink is a gift shop full of Peanuts items.

Sopwith Camel hanging from the ceiling.  This was created by a guy from Rice Lake WI and donated to the museum.
We stopped in Petaluma on the way back to get fuel before our trip tomorrow and to grab a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant.  Then back to the Coast Guard station to finish packing up.

We will bug out fairly early tomorrow as we have about a five hour or more drive to Eureka CA, our next stop.

  1. What a neat place. I bet our kids would enjoy seeing it. Who would have thought about a museum for him and his work.

To think that one day those types of cartoons/ comics will be lost.

  2. You should make sure the kids see a comic strip, like the Sunday paper. A dying item as papers continue to decline. Comic books too. Have they ever seen one?

  3. What a great find! Looks like a lot of fun. I can imagine school field trips are popular, aligning to some literacy curriculum! Did they have places where tv's played the cartoons? Boys' favorite line from the Great Pumpkin is "I got a rock!"
