30 June - Goodbye Eureka CA - Hello Gold Beach OR

30 June
This morning we wrapped things up at Eureka and departed just before 1000 hrs heading up California Highway 101.  It basically follows the coastline.  In places it is four lane, some places it is three lanes, two lanes or unfortunately one lane.  The single lane sections are where there have been rock slides on the east side or the road is eroding on the west side, and the DOT is working on them.
Where we had two or more lanes the going was still slow as the road was filled with curves and hills.  I think the highest grade we had was 7.5%.  The diesel RAM does fine on the grades but the curves really slow us down towing the condo on wheels.  Here are a few pictures from the drive:
Beautiful redwoods, these are fairly small.

Ferns and vegetation along side the road

Periodically the road would come near

Elk signs

A beautiful drive

Fog and mist in the forest.  Great picture!

An interesting gift shop and museum

The Oregon State line.
Once we hit Oregon the shoreline seemed closer but then wandered back into the woods.  Here are a few pictures of the shoreline:

Rocky shoreline.
Just before 1300 hrs we arrived at Gold Beach, OR after driving 138 miles.  The Turtle Rock RV park is on the south side of the town, and just on the east side of Highway 101, so we exited the highway, checked in and got set-up quickly.
The site is pull-through, full-hookup, which is always nice.
The laundry, shower and restroom is across the street behind us.

Plenty of space on both sides.

The drivers side is a grassy area for tents.
We had a late lunch and then took Liberty out for a stroll around the campground.  This place has both RV sites and cabins for rent that have hot tubs!

The RV park has it's own access under Highway 101 so we headed down the trail to check out the beach.

The beach.  Was cold and windy, very overcast.
Huge rocks along the beach.

Some stones Doreen found.
One last task for today!  First campground in Oregon, so we need to place the decal on the map!
We have reservations tomorrow afternoon on a jet boat that will take us up the Rogue River.
