24 June - San Francisco from a GoCar!!

24 June
Early this morning we took Liberty to the Doggie Day Care (also boards overnight) and headed back to Vallejo to catch a ferry to San Francisco.  The ferry terminal was not too busy when we arrived so we went to the coffee shop for a juice while we waited.  The terminal started getting crazy so we got in line and got some nice window seats on the lower level.

An hour later at about 1120 we arrived at Pier 41 near Fisherman's Wharf.  We had time to grab some lunch at the Chowder Hut.  I had their signature sourdough bread bowl full of clam chowder and Doreen had a delicious California burger which had tomato, guacamole, bacon, lettuce, onion and dill pickles!

After a quick lunch we headed to the GoCars shop and after signing our lives away and watching a do's and don'ts video, we finally got our GoCar.
Not much room inside these things, but sure does make sightseeing fun!

California helmet law!
We rented the GoCar for three hours which will allow us to do the "red loop", but we won't have much time to get our and stroll about.
Here are several pictures we took along the way.  I was busy driving with two hands like a motorcycle, so Doreen was the photographer.  We definitely did not get pictures of all the sights we saw, of no fault of Doreen's, but it was a fantastic ride:
Fort Mason Center

Military buildings on Crissy Field, old pre-WWII airfield

Location of the old air field

Aerial view of Crissy Field from Golden Gate Park

The lighthouse was there prior to them building the Golden Gate Bridge, so they built the bridge over it!

Very foggy today.  The top of the Golden gate Bridge was hidden in fog.
Baker beach

They say the water temp was in the 50's and so no one was in the water without a wet suit.  Most of the activities were on the beach.
Old windmill

Buffalo Park
Again, we saw a whole lot more sights than we got pictures, but the three hours went quickly, in fact so quickly that we did not have time to wait in line in our vehicle to go down Lombard Street.  Disappointing, but so it goes..!  We have both seen it previously but it was going to be one of our highlights of this trip.

Our GoCar was running very rough and actually would not restart once during the trip.  We called theor help line and it finally kicked over.  We made sure they were aware of this when we returned.

After the GoCar tour we walked around Fisherman's Wharf and down towards Pier 39.  The seals were out sunning themselves!

We strolled through the shops and headed back to Pier 41 to get in line.  The ferry departed at about 5:00pm and got into Vallejo at 6:30.  About an hour later we were back at the campground and planning tomorrow which is the Giants game.  to make the ferry, the cable car etc to get to the game we will need to leave the campground about 0600 hrs!  Ugh!  So, heading to bed.  More tomorrow!

  1. Those GoCars look awesome! What a cool way to site see! Did you get "off the beaten path" or were you on roads with other vehicles?

  2. You could go anywhere you wanted except NOT over the bridges or on the interstates. You had to watch a short do's and don'ts movie before they cut you loose. The GPS only covered certain routes though, so if you got off the beaten patch you were on your own as far as navigation. we were right on the street with the cars and trucks.
