28 June - Eureka! We Found It!

28 June
"Eureka!", California's State motto.  "Eureka.  We have found it!", from the California gold rush era.  Today it is "Eureka, we have found it!, our next RV park, that is.  We had a really nice drive up California Highway 101 today from Petaluma CA to Eureka CA.
This map still reflects the Redding CA stop, which has been replaced with Eureka.  Just imagine the "12" is west, right on the coast.  That is where we are!
We headed out about 0830 hrs and stopped to dump and rinse our on-board sewage tanks a couple blocks from our RV site at Petaluma.  We finished up and hit the road about 0900 hrs and arrived at Petaluma at 1410 hrs after driving 238 miles.

The drive was nice.  Doreen spotted a California "tiny house?  Well, maybe not!
It is very dry here.  We are on the west side of the Salmon Mountains, and everything except the trees is really brown and dry.

The route was fairly uneventful except for a couple spots where there were significant rock slides impacting traffic.  One was just north of Leggett CA.  We just arrived at the site when the northbound traffic started so our delay was minimal.  You could tell the southbounders were upset as many were outside their vehicles walking around.  The DOT was busy working on the rock slide and there were literally hundreds of rolls of wire mesh they had stockpiled to install.

Down to one lane.  It will be a long time before they get this cleared and both lanes open.

Things were a bit snug for the "condo on wheels" but we made it through!

Once clear of the rock slides the scenery was beautiful.  Much of the roadway was lined with fir trees and periodically we ran into areas full of redwood trees!  Wow, they are huge!

Large redwoods very close to the edge of the road

Beautiful route.

Avenue of the Giants

Some nice waterways. We saw many swimmers along the beaches.
Just after 1400 hrs we arrived at the Shoreline RV Park in Eureka CA.
I checked in with the young lady I spoke with on the phone days before when we made our reservations.  We got an end spot, which has one of the largest grass areas.  Liberty was very appreciative! Also they offer discounts for  military veterans, which was greatly appreciated.

Once we got set-up Doreen and I relaxed outside and tuned in the Chicago Cubs who are playing the Washington Nationals.  A little cheeze and crackers and a little wine from Napa.  Does not get any better!

Nice site!

Our end site, nice big yard area.

Glad we did not get the spot just to the left of us.  They have very little room between their RV and ours.
Tomorrow we plan to head up the coast and visit as many as five lighthouses, and then a seafood dinner in town.  Oysters for Ed!  Yeah!

  1. Awesome views. Cannot believe how big the trees are and I assume those are considered little!

Glad you were able to have some grass at your site. Seems like most of your campgrounds have very small sites between campers.

  2. We have not seen the really big redwoods yet but plan to in the next couple days. We have not had tons of room between the RV's, some bigger and some smaller. None like Prairie Flower, though.

  3. The rock slides must've been incredible to see but can imagine the traffic headaches they must cause! Nice site, for you! Your neighbor could've fell out their door and hit their head on your slide on his way down! Yikes!!

    1. Yeah, hate being that close but luckily the real close ones have been at sites we only occupied for a day or two.
