Wow, what a night. The wind never let up and a certain spouse of mine made sure I knew it. Seems like about every 15 minutes she woke me up to let me know the wind was blowing! Now I will say it was really howling and rocking the RV a bit, but not such that we needed to take cover or anything.
So today has been a long one, but an enjoyable drive from Oakley KS to Colorado Springs CO. We bugged out of Oakley about 0810 hrs central time and arrived at Peregrine Pines FamCamp at 1219 hrs mountain time.
I-70 was a nice chunk of pavement but again, the wind and the elevation climb trashed our MPG. At Limon CO we headed SE to Colorado Springs on Hwy 24 and due to a paving project and flagman one lane road, we were delayed a bit, but Pikes Peak came into view and it was quite a sight!
The Air Force Academy's campground is very beautiful, nestled in amongst huge pine trees which help to block the wind and everything else for that matter (AT&T signal strength is very weak here). Camp sites are spread out and are full hookup. They were able to get us a site where we could see the Directv satellites, so we tuned in the Cincinnati Reds at the Chicago Cubs tonight :-)
After getting situated we headed for the Visitor Center to get some information for tomorrow.
Our friends from Atlanta GA, Brad and Beth Herren, will arrive in the area tomorrow and we are going to tour the Air Force Academy together and then enjoy a dinner together. Brad and I were stationed together at Loring Air Force Base back in the mid 70's. Brad attended our daughter Michelle's wedding and Brad and Beth met us in Maine last summer where a bunch of us camped together! What a blast! So Brad retired as an executive with Kimberly Scott paper company, and Beth retired as a school teacher, so they bought a Winnebago motor home and are traveling the country like Doreen and I are.
OK, so April Fools is long gone folks! Here I sit whittling away at the blog tonight and watching the 10pm news in the background, and the weather comes in. Say what? Hey I know they legalized marijuana in this state, but these guys must be smoking some really good stuff. SNOW? LOWS IN THE 30's?? Now this is just not going to play! We planned to visit Cripple Creek! We have paid for a white water rafting trip on the Big Horn Sheep class III-IV for Saturday! ARG! Well, life is an adventure. We will improvise, adapt and overcome!
Never thought you would have snow on your trip?!! Glad it is warming up in Denver.
